A New Day!

Back in the dark ages (well, the early 2000s), my colleague and friend Michael Barlowe told me about a new, free, internet presence called Blogger. In those times, you had to be able to wade through html programming a bit, had to spend amazing time setting a blog up, and most of all, really WANT to be a blogger. I decided that it was a quick and easy (!) way to produce a parish website. And so I did...as an interim measure!

As with many things in the church, interim turned out to be about ten years. Today, we have a highly tech-savvy congregation, people who want to be involved in our social media outreach, and more than anything, parishioners who are willing to put in the time to make us evermore available on the web.

So the Nativity website has hereby morphed into the Rector's blog, and we will carry on, with our vestry member and communications guru Trish urging me to write reflections instead of worrying about keeping the website content current. I am so grateful for this opportunity and view it as yet another step in Nativity's growth towards reaching people in our own time in the way that people are reached most frequently.

So let us begin!

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever...2011!

Nativity is the Christmas Church, and we will again be presenting our rendition of the Nativity story on Sunday, December 18 at10 am. Rehearsals will happen after church under the direction of our ahle director Sarah McKinney and her assistant director Haley Gibbs.

We have room for angels and shepherds, we have speaking and non-speaking parts, we have an adult Angel mother hen, and we hope that our children will come, bring their neighbors and friends, and tell us the story one more time! Brief rehearsals take place at 11:30 on Sunday December 4, and Sunday, December 11, and the dress rehearsal is on Saturday, December 17. We hope you will bring your children, relatives and friends to take part in this sacred story!

Today our Children's Choir debuted, singing with the adults. We are hoping to make this a more regular offering at Nativity. They were all fantastic! Please see Marian Marsh if you are interested (adult or your child.) We ALWAYS have room for more singers!

Evening Prayer

Please join us the third Wednesday of each month for Evening Prayer at 6:45. Lay people officiate andlead lectio divina, the sacred pondering of the Gospel for the day. We also sing the canticles and an office hymn.

Marin Food Bank Drive

Each year we collect food for the Marin County Food Bank and more importantly, for our friends and neighbors in Marin County who are in need of this extra help. Please bring non-perishable items to church....our children are in charge of bringing food to the altar with the offerings to be blessed.

Please join us on Thanksgiving Day for an informal Holy Eucharist at 9:30 am. We sing, give thanks, make Eucharist, and enjoy a few minutes of peace together before the family arrives for dinner!

This year, at 2 pm, we will hold our First Annual Thanksgiving Potluck. Come and bring a dish and a friend, or just come! We are planning white table cloth, silver, and harvest table in the sanctuary.

September is here! Nativity celebrated "Welcome Home Sunday last week with a delicious brunch and auction. A wonderful time was had by all.

Our office team has implemented new communication devices for the church. We are now using Constant Contact to keep in touch with our parishioners. We send out a weekly email on Wednesdays with news on upcoming events and happenings here at the Church of the Nativity. If you would like to be included on our email list please contact the office; Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to Noon. Our phone number is 415 469-7023.

Our Creek, the Miller Creek

Nativity is so fortunate to be stewards of an amazing piece of property which includes a little corner of the Miller Creek. The creek is rushing these days, up to its banks, and we will be hiking down there soon to explore all of the sights and sounds of spring. The Marinwood Community Services District has published a great local trail map, and we are known as "Church Hill" on it.

Christmas on the Hilltop 2010

Christmas Eve, December 24, we celebrate Candlelight Christmas Eve with harp, choir, Christmas meditation, Children's Time, and Holy Eucharist. Luminaria and candles abound. All of these things light our way into the Christmas message of hope. 5 pm on the hilltop.

On Christmas Day, we celebrate a festive Holy Eucharist at 10 am. This year we baptize two new Christians into the body. Carols,choir and much festivity on our festal day.

THE DEATH PENALTY

You let your rain fall on the just and the unjust.

Expand and deepen our hearts

so that we may love as You love,

even those among us

who have caused the greatest pain by taking life.

For there is in our land a great cry for vengeance

as we fill up death rows and kill the killers

in the name of justice, in the name of peace.

Jesus, our brother,

you suffered execution at the hands of the state

but you did not let hatred overcome you.

Help us to reach out to victims of violence

so that our enduring love may help them heal.

Holy Spirit of God,

You strengthen us in the struggle for justice.

Help us to work tirelessly

This summer, I spent a good amount of time out in my garden, doing some planting and cleaning up and generally trying to make it an “outdoor room” for the summer (those of you who have visited my home know that the yard is just about as large as the entire house, so it is important and great space to use when I can!)

As I puttered, I thought about the ways in which we speak of contemplation and action as if they were two different activities, or worse, opposites. As I dug and watered and dead-headed and performed all of those other little tasks, I had time to pray about the earth, about planting and watering and growing and dying and re-seeding and all the things that we know are of God and of Jesus. These small tasks invited me to actively contemplate, (or to contemplatively act?), and I felt at one with myself and our Mother earth. Mother Mary (who occupies the prize corner of the garden) watched over me.

At the end of my vacation, I went with the rowers up to Fallen Leaf Lake. One day we took a hike just into the Desolation Wilderness, where we found secret swimming holes and spent the day swimming, eating and enjoying each other’s company. I brought along my camera, and in the middle of the stream, I found a rock which I fell in love with. As my friends meandered up the river, I spent a lot of time trying to capture the beauty of the thing: it seemed gold to me, shimmering just below the icey clear water. My pictures don’t do it justice. However, the simple act of trying to capture the beauty of it will stay with me a long time.

I encourage you to pay attention to your own acts of contemplation and bring them to your daily prayer, giving thanks for the uncaptureable beauty of God which is all around us!

LENTEN WEDNESDAYS

During Lend each Wednesday at 7 p.m. we are walking the Stations of the Cross. This is a beautiful and sacred walk and all are encouaged to attend. To see all of the services we offer during Lent and Holy Week please scroll down to last week's blog post.

CRAB FEED

We are still taking reservations for our annual Crab Feed. It will be held on Saturday, March 13, at the Marinwood Community Center at 5 p.m. This is our bigest fun raiser of the year and is a wonderful occasion of fun, food and fellowship. Tickets are $40.00 and available from T'sa Hammond and Ruth Baney. We also need items for the Auction - dinners, tickets to theater or sporting events, etc.

THE SOCKS PROJECT

During Lent, donations of new white socks will be collected in local parishes by students from the School for Deasons and delivered to Martin de Porres House of Hospitality in San Francisco or one of the local shelters in our diocese for distribution. The campain for socks will run until Palm Sunday, March 28th. A box will be provided at the back of the church. We need women's and/or men's white socks, any size.

Canon White first went to Iraq as the Archbishop of Canterbury's Middle Eastern Envoy and has become a widely respected champion of peacemaking through sectarian engagement, not only in Iraq, but throughout the Middle East.

Through his organization, the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, he works tirelessly with senior Shia, Sunni and Christian leaders to promote dialogue, understanding and long-term stability in the region.

He has won several peace prizes and appeared in middle eastern media, the BBC World Service and 60 Minutes. Canon White, popularly known as "the Vicar of Baghdad" will be speaking at The Church of the Nativity on Wednesday, May 6 , at 7 pm. There is no admission charge, and a free will offering will be taken to support Canon White' work. Please call the church office for further information.

We are hiking every Sunday after lunch, down to the creek which is at the bottom of the church property, to play and look and learn what she can teach us. Today we were surprised by the large amount of water (which should not surprise, given the rain we've had!) We ran down the path, played on the water's edge and held hands and listened to the waterfall.

Coyote Sighting on the Hilltop

Along with the (pregnant?)doe featured here, several coyotes have been sighted roaming around the Nativity hilltop and parking lot. We have posted signs warning folks not to approach these beautiful creatures: they are generally skitterish around people, but have been known to go after small pets...so please, keep Fido on a leash!

We give thanks every day for the chance to interact with nature on such a personal level on the hilltop: within the last three days, we have seen turkey vultures, doe and buck, coyote....and, lots of people too!

Mount Calvary Memories

The spiritual home to so many, and of the rector of this church, burned in the Tea Fire in Santa Barbara this week. This is a tragedy for many people. I thank Nativity parishioners and friends far and near for the personal support they have offered me. We continue to pray for the Mount Calvary Community and for the Order of the Holy Cross as they discern their immediate and long term future in Santa Barbara.

I offer these pictures as a partial memory of the place. Pictures of the fire can be found by searching the internet. I prefer these happier memories. As we know, the body of Christ is its people, and thanks be to God that all the brothers - Roy, Nick, Laurence, Will, Joseph, Tom, Rafael - and the staff, Nancy and Luis and others, were able to evacuate safely. And their presence and ministry at the sacred place which was Mount Calvary Monastery will live on in the hearts and minds of many people around the world.

Contempo Marin - the story!

Please read this document provided by Contempo Marin and ask Stacey or Dick Heine should you have questions. Nativity wants to support our members living at Contempo, and all who are under threat of losing their homes.

Contempo Marin is a 397-unit mobile home park on Yosemite road near Smith Ranch Road in the northern part of the City of San Rafael. Of the nearly 1,000 people who live in the park many are retired senior citizens. There are also working couples with young children. It has been designated by the City of San Rafael as an affordable housing community. Many city, county and government employees like postal workers, firefighters, retired police officers, school teachers and others rely on the affordable housing at Contempo Marin for a place to live.

The park was opened in 1972 and many of its residents date from that era. Most homes are doublewide units with about 1,400 square foot interiors and are well-maintained by the homeowners. The park’s amenities include a large lagoon with a 1/2-mile walking path around it, and a clubhouse with activity rooms, a swimming pool, and a hot tub.

Residents hold title to their homes but don’t own the land on which their homes sit, which they rent. Some homes are fully paid for, and others have mortgages. Rents currently range from $665 to $800 per month. Other fees for water, garbage, utilities, and common-area property improvements are paid by residents in addition to their base rent. The owner of the land, the clubhouse, and other common-area amenities is Equity LifeStyle Properties, Inc, a two billion
dollar nationwide real estate investment firm headquartered in Chicago. The Chairman of the Board is billionaire Sam Zell. Zell is currently number 52 on the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. Zell has been acquiring undervalued RV and mobile home parks in 28 states since the early 90’s. Currently his company controls 311 parks totaling 112,779 residential sites with rental revenues of 200 million per year.

The City of San Rafael enacted a rent control ordinance in 1989, which limits rent increases for home sites at Contempo Marin to an amount pegged to the annual cost of living increase. When Zell acquired the rent controlled park in 1994, he filed suit against the City in Federal Court challenging the ordinance as unconstitutional. The previous owner had attempted a similar challenge against the city in the state court but was defeated. In January 2008, eight years after the case was filed, Judge Vaughn Walker issued his Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law ruling in favor of the landowner and ordering the city to cease any further enforcement of the ordinance, essentially ending rent control for the park. A final hearing is pending before execution of the order takes effect.

The City of San Rafael is contesting the decision by appealing the case to the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The city has a strong practical motivation to maintain the park’s large stock of affordable housing, which the state sanctions local governments to provide and preserve. The Contempo Marin Homeowners Association’s interests are represented pro-bono by the firm of Cooley, Godward, Kronish, LLP in San Francisco. The Association and its counsel believe that the decision will be reversed on appeal.

In the meantime based on the Federal Court’s decision Equity LifeStyle Properties notified residents their monthly rent will be $1,925, nearly triple the current rent being charged, as soon as the order is executed. While this court decision could be reversed on appeal, the residents have no assurance that an interim remedy can be found to mitigate the catastrophic rent increase during the appeal process. Many of Contempo Marin’s residents are on fixed incomes.
Faced with a rent increase of this magnitude many will be forced to abandon their homes and mortgages, including any equity they may have. Furthermore, deregulation of rents instantly wipes out the resale value of all the homes, dramatically reducing the net worth of every homeowner in the park.

Another looming threat to Contempo Marin residents comes in the form of Proposition 98 on the state ballot this coming June. It is billed as a corrective to alleged abuses of local governments that use eminent domain to condemn and buy private properties for redevelopment purposes. But the Proposition also includes fine print that would lead to the end of rent control statewide and eliminate affordable housing protected by existing rent control ordinances in over 100 California cities. The campaign for Proposition 98 is being supported heavily by mobile home park owners and wealthy land owners. If it passes in June, it would eliminate any hope of a future restoration of rent control for Contempo Marin residents.

The Contempo Marin Homeowners Association asks fellow Marin County residents for their help by casting NO votes on Proposition 98 in June. They ask voters to vote YES on Proposition 99, which truly reforms eminent domain but does not eliminate rent control. It also thanks the San Rafael City Council for its ongoing commitment to protect affordable housing, a benefit to both Contempo Marin and Marin County as a whole.

Mt. Calvary under the Zaca Fire

Since July 4, a terrible fire has been raging in the wilderness north and a bit east of Santa Barbara. As of this writing, over 120,000 acres have been burned. We have not heard of this because no homes have been destroyed. Please pray for the firefighters and all attending to this fire in a one hundred year old forest.

The fire cast amazing light on the mountains over the monastery, both firey warm and smokey cold.

Keiskamma Altarpiece at Grace Cathedral

Grace Cathedral will display the Keiskamma Altarpiece, a monumental (13’x 22’) artwork created by 120 South African women, in the only Northern California stop on its North American tour, March 27 – May 27, 2007. The altarpiece, which draws inspiration from Renaissance-era altarpieces, conveys a message of hope for people who are contending with the devastation that AIDS has wrought in their lives in the midst of poverty and other hardships. It is created of embroidery, beadwork, wire sculpture and photographs. “Grace Cathedral and Hamburg, South Africa are two places 10,000 miles apart that have faced the same epidemic, and both chose to reflect their hopes in the same way, using images of the triptych and fabric,” said Alan Jones, dean of Grace Cathedral.

Diocesan House has recently been transformed into an art gallery, Gallery 1055, featuring works that challenge and inform us spiritually. The newest installation is a remarkable rendering of the Stations of the Cross created by artist and priest Eliza Linley. Created for St. John’s, Oakland, Linley's stations do not use traditional symbols and imagery. Rather, they are a meditation on how Christ continues to be crucified among us today through injustice and oppression, poverty, war and imprisonment, and the punishment of death. These images combine silk painting with photomontage. They push a lyrical medium toward the edge of graphic realism, inviting us to see our world with eyes that seek justice and hearts rooted in compassion.

Visitors are welcome to visit Gallery 1055 (1055 Taylor Street, that is!), anytime between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Help Create an Easter Basket!

Nativity is repeating last year's successful Lenten project by preparing Easter food baskets for needy families served by Ritter House. You may take a basket from the rear of the church, or use your own, to fill with goodies, or you can simply donate food items and leave them in the large storage basket. Ideally each Easter basket that we donate will contain a canned ham, a bottle of sparkling cider, some Easter candy for children, and some nice side items such as canned vegetables or fruit, boxed rice or noodle dishes, rolls, etc. Be creative! Last year people included flowering plants, small stuffed animals, cupcakes, etc. Hams can be left in the church fridge or we will store them at home until time for delivery. Ritter House will pick the baskets up on Thursday morning, April 5 and distribute them to families. Our goal is to contribute 20 baskets. Thank you for your generosity!

It's 5 miles of walking around the Lagoon area, solving the Worlds’ problems at the same time. There is a registration fee, and each participant gets donations, 90% of the money collected will come back to the church. Meet the Unsinkable Molly Brown, a Katrina rescue dog recently adopted by Stacey from the Marin Humane Society. She will make her public debut some Sunday in April, and for now is enjoying pats, treats and walks with all the office volunteers and visitors. She is very friendly with everyone she meets, including children, but is wary of other dogs. The Rector and the Church Dog will be attending obedience classes very soon!
